Low vs medium vs high risk in Plinko

The risk selector is the only meaningful choice in Plinko, and most players pick it on feel. Here is what each setting actually does to the numbers on the 16-row board, and which bankroll each one suits.

Risk (16 rows)TopLowestDrops ≥1×Std dev / betRTP
Low16×0.5×80.4%0.3399.00%
Medium110×0.3×45.4%1.4798.99%
High1000×0.2×21.0%6.5798.98%

Low risk: the grinder's board

Lowest bucket 0.5×, top 16×, 80% of drops return at least your stake. Standard deviation is under one bet per drop, so a 500-drop session rarely swings more than ±25 bets. This is the board for rakeback: maximum wager volume for minimum variance. It is also, frankly, the least exciting – the balance crawls.

Medium risk: the default

Centre bucket 0.3×, corners 110×, 45% of drops at or above 1×. Standard deviation about 1.5 bets. Hits of 5× or 10× arrive every few dozen drops – often enough to feel rewarded, rare enough that the balance has a visible trend. Bankroll of 150 bets for a comfortable 500-drop session.

High risk: the lottery

Nine of seventeen buckets pay 0.2×; 79% of drops lose 80% of the stake. The corners pay 1000× at 1 in 32,768. Standard deviation 6.6 bets per drop – the balance behaves like a slow leak punctuated by occasional explosions, and most sessions end well down because the RTP is concentrated in outcomes you did not see. Bankroll of 300–500 bets, and the stop-on-profit limit becomes essential.

Does row count interact with risk?

Yes. Fewer rows compress the whole table: 8-row high risk tops out at 29× and the corners hit 1 in 128, so the "lottery" is far more frequent and far smaller. If you want high-risk excitement without the 16-row drought, 8 or 10 rows high is a reasonable middle ground. The multiplier table shows every combination.

Our recommendation

Play each board for 200 drops on the free simulators and look at the net figure. Then pick the one whose worst 200 drops you could afford to repeat five times in a row with real money. That is usually a lower risk level than people expect.
